Laminex and Tom Mark Henry Reinvent Timber Style in The Family Kitchen Project

In a design collaboration that boldly steps away from tradition, Laminex and interior design studio Tom Mark Henry have unveiled The Family Kitchen, a concept-driven project that gives woodgrain finishes a fresh, contemporary identity.

Set in a vibrant domestic setting, the space showcases how Laminex’s Australian Native decors—featuring innovative TrueScale and AbsoluteGrain finishes—can transform everyday materials into something architecturally elevated and deeply tactile.

A New Vision for Timber Aesthetics

This isn’t your typical timber-inspired kitchen. Laminex’s material palette pushes the boundaries of design through unexpected details—think alternating grain directions on paneled cabinet doors, generously proportioned Blackbutt TrueScale handles, and a sculptural island benchtop in curved Outback Clay. These elements bring both drama and harmony to the space, creating a look that is as playful as it is sophisticated.

Craft Meets Concept

To bring this creative vision to life, Laminex partnered with Andy Joachim of Evolve Group (Interiors & Stone). Through meticulous planning and close collaboration with experienced cabinet makers, the team demonstrated that even the most intricate joinery and design elements are achievable on a real-world scale.

“Reproducing the detailed curved island and oversized custom handles was made possible through strategic fabrication,” Joachim noted. “The finishes don’t just mimic natural timber—they open up new design pathways that solid timber or veneer alone can’t provide.”

TrueScale and AbsoluteGrain: Redefining Woodgrain Surfaces

At the heart of the transformation is Laminex’s TrueScale and AbsoluteGrain technology. These advanced surface finishes offer a realistic timber look and feel, while providing greater flexibility in terms of shaping, grain alignment, and long-term durability—ideal for busy, high-traffic family kitchens.

TrueScale delivers the visual depth and variation of real wood, while AbsoluteGrain adds tactile texture that enhances the authenticity of the finish. When used in combination, they enable designers to replicate the warmth and richness of timber with modern performance benefits like ease of cleaning, water resistance, and consistent coloring across applications.

Where Innovation Meets Family Function

The Family Kitchen isn’t just a design statement—it’s a functional space built to adapt to the dynamic rhythm of family life. Large drawers, integrated seating zones, and sculptural surfaces ensure the room is as usable as it is visually compelling. And with Laminex’s Australian Native range, it brings a uniquely Australian identity to the forefront of modern interior design.

Whether you're renovating a kitchen, designing a new-build, or simply rethinking cabinetry solutions, this project demonstrates the power of daring material choices, expert craftsmanship, and fearless creativity.

With Laminex and Tom Mark Henry at the helm, The Family Kitchen reimagines the possibilities of woodgrain—inviting us all to stop playing it safe and start creating with confidence.
