Perched in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, Studio Saxe’s Solai House offers a masterclass in merging modern architecture with the raw beauty of its surroundings. The project’s guiding vision is a “dialogue between opposites,” expressed through a grounded lower volume and a seemingly weightless upper level. This interplay creates both contrast and harmony, anchoring the home to the earth while allowing it to float above the tropical terrain.
Open-Air Connections and Framed Vistas
A central open-air corridor links the two main volumes, guiding movement through the property while framing sweeping views of the jungle and ocean. This interstitial space not only connects, but also choreographs how residents and guests experience the site. The elevated pavilion features a rhythmic brise-soleil of wooden slats, regulating light and airflow while enhancing the sensation of levitation. Slim glass panels maintain comfort while ensuring uninterrupted engagement with the lush landscape.
Design That Breathes With the Environment
The home’s fragmented form invites layered encounters — from intimate garden corners to dramatic ocean panoramas — blending architecture seamlessly into nature. Interiors were developed alongside the structure, ensuring a continuous narrative. Natural textures, earthy palettes, and reforested teak ceilings echo the environment, while an open staircase within a vertical garden and an infinity pool reinforce the indoor-outdoor connection.
